Our History
T he Black Mountain Shared Space Project (BMSSP) was established in 2009 with a noble mission: to heal the divisions in West Belfast and foster a sense of unity across historical divides.
Formally constituted in 2013, BMSSP embarked on a journey to dismantle barriers—not just the physical walls that separated communities, but the unseen walls that stood between hearts and minds.
Through tireless community-based initiatives and critical conversations among influential local voices, BMSSP has championed the cause of peacebuilding and reconciliation.
Our work, sensitive to the ever-shifting political landscape, has reached deeply into the community, touching the lives of those most affected by the legacy of conflict and the challenges of poverty and marginalization.
A Decade of Unity and Progress
Our efforts have borne fruit.
More than 3,000 individuals have engaged in our peacebuilding and capacity-building activities, with over 1,000 first-timers taking bold steps across the peace lines, many for the first time in their lives.
These personal journeys of courage have paved the way for a collective leap towards a shared future.
The crowning achievement of BMSSP’s decade-long efforts is the cross-community support for the Shared Space capital build initiative.
This vision is soon to be realized in the form of a community facility, an environmental hub adjacent to the scenic Black Mountain, and community enterprise units.
This hub is more than a building; it’s a symbol of regeneration and reconciliation, a place where both communities can come together for mutual benefit.
As we look back on our history, we see a tapestry of challenges and triumphs, woven together by the common thread of hope. The story of BMSSP is still being written, and every day, we add a new line to our shared narrative of peace and progress.
